Bitterness Bug

Recently I’ve noticed that there are many people harboring bitterness in their hearts, and its made me look at my life and see if I am doing the same. Luke has something to say about the things that we harbor in our hearts.

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. -Luke 6:45

Luke is saying that we have to be careful with our speech because whatever is harbored in our hearts is what comes out of our mouths. This is a tough subject because sometimes its hard to recognize these things in us. Bitterness is when you are coveting, when you are jealous, or when you resent something or someone. The things you say will give you away. For instance, if a man wasn’t good to you, and you’re bitter about it, it will show. If your friends have more than you and you’re bitter, your speech about your friends will prove it.

Nothing good ever comes from bitterness. Once when I was in high school, I was very good friends with a girl. One day, I arrived at school after being sick for about two days to find that she was upset with me. I had no idea what for, then I heard from others that she was jealous about me getting a part in the singing group we were in, and that I was “trying to be a loner”. All of which was untrue, I felt sad because I originally had supported her in getting that singing part but the teacher said my voice was better fit for it. Long story short, her words were very unkind to me and after that day I saw the unraveling of her bitterness. I had no idea she had that stored in her heart until then.

Now, in fairness to her, I now understand she was going through some hard stuff, however, my point is, her bitterness showed to not just me, but everyone in our school. I want all good things for her, and I hope she’s happy but, I wish her bitterness hadn’t gotten in the way of our friendship.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every from of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you. -Ephesians 4:31-32

Bitterness is not a quality that the children of God should have, and it is not worth holding on to. Wouldn’t you much rather have joy?  There are so many other things to be thankful for and things that we can put our energy into. Whenever Im upset, Ive found that Im only upset for about 15 minutes and then Im over whatever made me upset. Ive always been this way, but I am so thankful God created me that way. When someone around me is telling me about this bitterness and anger they have, I can’t help but to wonder how in the world they hold on to it for so long. It must be so tiring and draining.

As children of the Lord, He wants us to be happy, He wants us to be joyful! When there is bitterness in our hearts, we must turn to Him because thats the only way it will be replaced by good things. I have been bitter about something, and God told me that I would continue to be upset until I gave it to Him and forgot about it. Giving the bitterness to Him is not always easy, but it is so worth it. Bitterness does nothing for you except drain your happiness, takes away your joy, and wedges you away from God.

If you’re bitter, ask God to heal you from whatever made you bitter and give it up to Him! He sees you, He hears you and He is faithful, He will help you and make you joyful. True joy comes from being in relationship with Him.

As I walked out the door toward my freedom, I knew that if I did not leave all the anger, hatred, and bitterness behind, that I would still be in prison. -Nelson Mandela

Much love,
